Criterion Games has emerged in this generation as one of the most important developers. Firstly, because the company's technology division is responsible for Renderware, the most important cross-platform development tool of the day and, second, for the Burnout saga, the frantic speed game with spectacular collisions. Focusing so far on just one saga, the British company, recently bought by EA, proves a new territory increasingly explored in console: first-person action. With Black, Criterion Games has tried to do with the genre of action in the first person the same as in his day made with that of speed. If at Burnout they focused on frantic speed, paying no attention to the simulation or other "collateral" things, In Black have attempted to redefine the genre of action in the first person by focusing on what makes it possible: bullets. And their enormous collateral damage. Black tries to be a frantic action movie and most of the time it succeeds. The action does not cease at any moment, the enemies surround us and attack us continuously, and rarely will we have to release the trigger to worry about the ammunition or not make too much noise. And when we pull the trigger we will see what happens, because the stage reacts dynamically to the bullets; These are not limited to being "marked" in it with the typical texture overprinted, will destroy it, will provoke reactions that, naturally, can be used to kill enemies. The story in Black is somewhat superficial and is told as flashbacks, In an interrogation between a senior government official and the soldier in charge of the action. The cinematic of this interrogation are of real image, with a style that resembles the one of series like CSI, being quite striking, although the game does not emphasize at all the history. These cinematic attempts to make up the complete absence of history in the game, something that Criterion had warned by saying that he would focus solely on action. Black is therefore a somewhat anachronistic shooter, in the sense that, like the first person action games of a few years ago, it does not interleave the story within the levels, it has no exploration or adventure parts, no puzzles, Or practically nothing beyond firepower. But the action is so frantic, so violent, so constant, Which does not make them too necessary; Black's challenge is not to solve puzzles, nor its fun in knowing how the story ends. The challenge, and its fun, is to destroy everything. The levels of Black are quite varied, alternating urban and rural environments, so to speak, where the common denominator is the overwhelming number of enemies we will have to deal with, and the suspicious amount of objects that, with a sufficient number of bullets , Can explode to destroy enemies around. The missions usually consist of going from point A to B, but with a design not very linear, and in that journey we will have to pull the trigger constantly to finish everything that moves. In the missions there will also be secondary objectives that we will have to fulfill, Although they do not go beyond collecting objects or simply destroying them. The objectives are fairly well integrated within the levels, and many times we will meet them by chance, although it would have been to thank for something more that indicated them more clearly. The control of Black is that of any action game in first person for console to use, with the two analog sticks controlling the movement and the look of the character, and the usual buttons to shoot, crouch, etc ... the grenade system is similar To that of Halo, that is to say, we can throw a grenade with a button, without more complications, although we will not have great options to calibrate its launching. What we can do, and is advisable given that the enemies are not exactly fools and seeing a grenade flee, Is to shoot the own grenade so that it explodes before and thus has greater effect. Black's key is shootings. Every situation in which we find ourselves can, and indeed must - except sometimes where we can be stealthy - be solved with brute force, firing hundreds of bullets, and observing the result. This is actually achieved thanks to the physics of the game, which makes all elements of the scenario react to bullets. If we are covered behind a tree trunk and are shot, it will slowly shatter, and so on with a box ... and with a wall. If we find that some enemies are inside a house, we will not have to follow the usual approach of other games of the genre - enter through the door -, but we can shoot the walls of the house, Destroying them little by little and hoping that, once we enter the gate, the enemies lie dead. This is especially useful in wooden constructions such as watchtowers, or wooden floors, being able to make shootouts between really effective heights. Combustible or explosive objects are also widely distributed throughout the game, guaranteeing a quick solution to wipe out a garrison of soldiers near a car, as well as objects that, because of bullets, will fall to crush enemies. The design of the scenarios allows all this, although sometimes in a somewhat forced way, and also in the levels there are some really funny and "unique" situations, like having to make our way through a minefield. The artificial intelligence of the enemies is quite good, although sometimes there are certain silly mistakes in the behavior of the soldiers, and sometimes, on the contrary, even if we try to hide, they will always know where we are. The story mode of Black consists of eight levels, with a total duration of about six hours, something that is somewhat disappointing. The game is very replayable precisely because the levels do not require more complexity and annoyance than that of shooting like crazy and watching the show; You do not even have to aim, just enough bullets. And these abound all over the stage, and in large numbers on fallen enemies. The problem is that, aside from the brief history mode, Black does not have a multiplayer mode that increases its duration. This is a real pity, Because playing Black online would have been a real treat. Maybe you needed a lot of bandwidth to send such a lot of bullets. Graphic level Black is one of the most spectacular games today, with some special effects comparable to those of new generation games. The scenarios are large and have a great level of detail, although in the PS2 version is noted low resolution in some textures. Enemies, although not very varied, are well modeled and animated, but what gets the palm are special effects, explosions, smoke, sparks ... and real-time modifications of the scene caused by bullets. This is one of the most visually stunning games on the market, especially in the case of PS2 Maybe you needed a lot of bandwidth to send such a lot of bullets.
